Tri-State's speaker for the October meeting was John Lonsdale, who was born in Sheffield, England. During his early years his mother took him around to nursery after nursery; it had deep, but subconscious effect on him later in life. His interest in plants started to surface when John bought a small house with an even smaller garden in the south-eastern part of England. In the UK he specialized in growing Alpine plants, primarily primula, cushion saxifrages, and hardy bulbs, including an extensive collection of cyclamen. In 1995, John and his family moved to the United States and purchased a property with a little over 1.5 acres in Exton, PA. His collection today includes cyclamen, corydalis, narcissus, crocus, fritillaria, iris and erythronium are favorite bulbs, planted amidst an extensive collection of woodland plants.
