Spring Meeting Program

March 23, 2002

The featured speaker at our spring indoor meeting on March 23rd, at the Frelinghuysen Arboretum in Morristown, New Jersey, will be Bob Solberg of Green Hill Farms, Chapel Hill, NC.

Just a reminder that the March 23rd meeting at the Frelinghuysen Arboretum in Morristown, N.J. technically begins at noon with food (our second addiction besides hostas). So please bring your lunch and a dessert to share and take this opportunity to visit with hosta friends, old and new. Tri-State will provide the beverages as usual.

The initial frenzy of plant buying will begin about 1:00 pm, followed by a brief business meeting. Once again Bob Solberg, member and owner of Green Hill Farm in Chapel Hill, N.C., will entertain us for the afternoon with a program he calls "something new and exciting" in a game-like format. Bob has never disappointed us, so we are looking forward to what he has planned. After Bob's program, and after you have digested your lunch, double-checked your wish list and reformulated your plant purchase budget for the year, you will have another opportunity to hit the sale tables. We look forward to seeing you all there.

Annual Plant Sale

1:00 p.m.
Well it's that time of year again, so clear off your sunny window sills in preparation for the new hostas you will be purchasing at our annual plant sale on March 23rd at the Frelinghuysen Arboretum in Morristown, N.J. Dave Chopko has been combing through catalogs and wholesale sale sheets from various suppliers, carefully evaluating what plants are available this year. At this time, we can only tell you what plants he has ordered. We will have to wait until the sale date to see what actually arrives. Our suppliers send what looks good at shipping time, substituting other plants in some cases, if the ones we have ordered don't live up to our expectations. At this time, the plants that have been ordered include: H.'Five O'Clock Shadow', 'First Frost', 'Jewel of the Nile', 'Korean Snow', 'Lily Pad', 'Moon Lily', 'Thumbelina', 'Whirling Dervish', 'Angel Feathers', 'Olive Branch', 'Ultramarine', 'Captain Kirk', 'Alligator Shoes' and 'Curtain Call', to name but a few.

With the assistance of members Carol Brashear and Bill Meyer, the color page on the front of the Spring 2002 newsletter depicts some of the plants we hope to have at our sale. As in the past, a complete list of plants for sale, with prices and descriptions, will be available at the sale. Since quantities many be limited for some varieties, purchases will be made according to random drawing. So be prepared to adjust your 2002 plant budget after the March 23rd meeting.
