The Sandford Garden

11 Lyman Road Extension, Wolcott, CT

203-879-4363 or 203-910-9546 (Matt Sanford’s Cell #)

This Sanford garden was established by Matt Sanford approximately six years before his recent marriage, and though he has since created a second garden at his new home, this one remains for him to maintain, and for his mother June, and others like us, to enjoy.

Situated on one acre of land in Wolcott, CT the garden includes over 700 hosta varieties. Matt has a passion for the larger cultivars so some of the more notable hostas in the beds include H. ‘ Liberty’, ‘Bigga Luigi’, ‘ Helios’, and ‘Dragon Lady’, to name but a few. Besides hostas the garden is filled with many other shade tolerant perennials including hellebores, ferns, astilbes, brunnera, sedges, and a sprinkling of daylilies. In addition to being our new Membership Secretary, Matt has the distinction of being one of our youngest members, so come see what youth and energy can accomplish.

Pattie & Ed Traver’s Garden

14 Rustic Acres Drive, Wolcott, CT 06716

203- 879-3454

A short drive from the Sanford garden, the Traver garden has an outstanding collection of mature hostas on 1.3 acres of land, artfully planted around a large patio and swimming pool. Though there are two perennial beds and a small vegetable garden it is the Traver collection of 1,100 plus hostas that set the lush tone of this garden, with probably the largest collection of Mary Chastain’s Lakeside varieties, next to her own. Ed has 126 Lakeside hostas, only lacking six varieties to complete his collection! Looking at the size of the hostas in this garden it is hard to believe that the garden was only created about six years ago. Though Ed modestly denies doing anything “special” to encourage the growth of his enormous plants, we suspect his employment at a local sewer treatment plant might have something to do with his success. There’s gold in them there hills and the Traver’s have the garden to prove it! There will be an auction at the Traver garden, so in addition to your lunch, a dessert to share, and a chair, please bring a plant or two for the auction.

There will be a plant auction after you have had a chance to tour the garden and eat your lunch. So please remember to bring plants for the auction, a chair to sit on, your own lunch and a dessert to share.

Shopping at Russell’s Wholesale Nursery

600 New Road, Churchville, PA

Saturday, July 19, 2008 from 8 a.m. to 12 noon

215-322-4799

The Russell’s are once again opening their wholesale nursery to us. Those of us who have been there before are looking forward to scouring the greenhouses in search of new “must-have” hostas and perennials, sold at wholesale prices. For those of you who have never been to Russell’s before, you are in for a treat. Get there as early as you can and be prepared to load your cart full of goodies. A large hosta display garden was added to the nursery in preparation for the Convention that was held in Philadelphia in 2006. The display garden was sensational then, in its infancy, so we can’t wait to see how it has matured.

Directions to Russell’s Wholesale Nursery

From the North: Take I-287 South to Route 202 (FLEMINGTON). Go through the toll booths into PA. Stay right to exit into New Hope. Travel slowly through New Hope (you have no choice, it is a tourist town) and make a right onto Route 232 South. Continue on through Richboro (about 20 minutes) where you will bear right just after a McDonald’s. About 1 mile on the right is New Road. Make the right onto New Road and enter the wholesale nursery (the first entrance on the left). If you need detailed directions from other points please contact the Nursery at 215-322-4799.
