It has been many years since Tri-State "officially" toured the garden of Roberta and Dave Chopko, though hundreds of gardeners have been "unofficially" wandering in and out of this garden's shady paths in the intervening years. Once heralded as "the premier hosta garden on the east coast", the garden has gone through a metamorphosis since we were here last. Though it is still primarily a "hosta garden", it is now a true collector's garden, with specimen plantings of many unusual shade perennials. Dave has branched out and discovered the world of arisaemas, disporum, polygonatum, podophyllum and tricyrtis and you will find varieties in this garden that you have never seen before. Roberta has developed a keen interest in ferns and it has become a challenge for the Chopkos to find enough space in this single acre of land to integrate all of these different plants into their vast hosta collection. New beds have been created, more trees have been planted, and berms have been added, giving the garden additional dimension and a new look.
So bring your lunch, a chair, a dessert to share, and your camera, and come see the garden they have created. Also, there will be an auction here, so please bring a plant or two to donate, hostas or companion plants are both appreciated.
