As an extra enticement to make the trip to Pennsylvania Walter Cullerton has arranged for our members to shop at Russell Gardens Wholesale Nursery in Churchville, PA between the hours of 8 a.m. and 11:30 a.m.
With a zillion perennials at wholesale prices there is color everywhere at Russells. Most plants are in two-quart pots and sell for less than $3.00, though the new and rare collector plants are somewhat more. The Russells (Dad Cliff, a Tri-State member, Allen and his brothers) will be on hand to greet us and to help us locate our favorite perennials. Come early to shop (as many of us have learned) because the time flies by when you are walking the grounds of this fantastic wholesale nursery. After shopping, paying and packing your car the trip to the Cullerton garden is only 15-20 minutes. (See directions below)
You are invited to visit the Cullertons and their new/old garden in picturesque Bucks County, PA. Only a few minutes from New Hope and Peddler's Village, the garden is entering its third growing season after moving from East Hanover, NJ. A three-acre property of dense woods, a barn, a pasture, a creek, and a springhouse set the stage for a collection of over 500 hostas. Framed by various rooms, the hostas are kept company by a multitude of shade companion perennials, as well as some sun lovers. Scattered throughout is a budding conifer collection, and a variety of unusual, as well as common shrubs and trees.
Bring your lunch, a dessert to share, and a lawn chair. Tri-State always provides the beverages. Also bring a hosta or two for the auction; that fun-filled, comical, sometimes spine-tingling dramatic event that ends the day and sends everyone home happy as a hosta.
TO RUSSELLS NURSERY: Take Route 287 to Route 202 in Flemington. Proceed South on Route 202 through the Delaware River tollbooths. Stay right to exit into New Hope. Proceed through town and make a right up the hill on Route 232 South. Proceed to Richboro (approximately 20 minutes) where Route 232 will bear right at traffic light just after McDonalds. About 1 mile on the right is New Road and a Russells Gardens sign. Make a Right onto New Road and just up on the left is Russell Gardens Wholesale. (Do not confuse with Russell Garden Center, it is a little further down the road.)
FROM RUSSELLS TO CULLERTONS: Retrace onto Route 232 North towards New Hope. In approximately 4 miles you will turn Left (North) on Route 413/Durham Road. Go approximately 1 mile and through Pineville traffic light and you will come to Geerlings Wholesale Nursery.
NOTE: THERE IS NO PARKING AT CULLERTONS. PLEASE PARK AT GEERLINGS NURSERY AND WE WILL TRANSPORT YOU THE 4/10 MILE TO THE CULLERTONS.We are assuming that everyone will want to take the opportunity to visit the Russell Wholesale Nursery since it is not usually open to the retail public, but if you wish to go directly to the Cullertons.
FROM POINTS NORTH:Take 287 South to Exit # 30/Route 202 Flemington. Stay on Route 202 through the Flemington traffic circle and continue to the Delaware River toll bridge. After the toll, proceed on Route 202 through Peddler's Village for 6.8 miles. As Route 202 bears right to Doylestown, stay straight on Route 263 ¼ mile to Rte 413 at the Wawa. Go Left/South on Route 413 for 3.3 miles around a sharp curve to the right and park at Geerling's Wholesale Nursery as outlined above.
