August 2007 Garden Tour

Saturday, August 4, 2007 at 11:00 a.m.

Paul Young in Bethel, CT

The following is what Paul Young has to say about his garden:

With the time and energy of retirement in July of 1999, Limewood Farm began to emerge as a collection of hosta on ten acres of rich soil, four acres of which are under the water of a peaceful pond which is the focal point. Originally designed with mass plantings of the largest hosta varieties, it morphed into “Hooked on Hosta” and has resulted in the collection of more than 650 different cultivars spread throughout the 3,000 linear feet around the shoreline of the pond and into the nooks and crannies of the shade gardens.

In addition, woody plants create a backbone setting for the hosta. Mountain laurel, flowering dogwood, viburnum, and many ornamental trees provide interest and protection from the sun. There are moss and rock gardens and the newest is a mini garden, all with the emphasis on the species hosta.

Please come and enjoy the “monster” created by a hosta addict. Park in the orchard and share in the annual Tri-State Picnic!” Tour the garden on your own beginning at 11 a.m. Food will be available after 12:30. Please bring a chair, and a DESSERT, a SALAD, OR a SIDE DISH. The meats and beverages will be provided.

As a special bonus, each member (family or individual membership) will be given a H. ‘Judy Rocco’ to plant in their garden as a remembrance of one of our Society’s founders.

As usual, members are invited to sell plants in tailgate fashion, with 15% of their proceeds going to Tri-State. This event will take place rain or shine. Everyone enjoys a picnic, so please come and enjoy!
